Further investigation has been done and continues, since the incident.

It was learned that during the altercation, the suspect gained control of the officer’s wood baton and struck the officer multiple times in the head; resulting in injuries to the officer.  The officer was able to access his firearm during the altercation and fired one round, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was later identified as Ronald AKERS, 42 years of age.

Since the incident, AKERS had been recovering from his injuries at a local area hospital.

On May 14th, 2019 AKERS was released from the hospital and transported to the Washoe County Jail.

AKERS was booked for Attempted Murder with a Deadly Weapon, Battery on a Protected Person, Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Obstructing and Resisting with a Deadly Weapon.

On March 20, 2019, at 8:51am officers with the Reno Police Department responded to the 700 block of South Meadows Parkway for a subject reportedly Trespassing. The officer located the suspect a short distance away in the 9800 block of Double R Blvd. The suspect was uncooperative, and an altercation ensued between the suspect and the officer resulting in injuries to the officer and the officer discharging his firearm striking the suspect. Additional officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. Police, Fire and Medics arrived on scene and provided medical aid to the officer and suspect. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

The officer is reportedly in stable condition, and the condition of the subject is still being evaluated by medical personnel. We appreciate the community support and patience during this ongoing investigation. There are no outstanding suspects or victims.

The Regional Officer Involved Shooting Protocol was enacted, and Sparks Police detectives are leading the investigation with the assistance of Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the investigative report will be turned over to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office for review, per the Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol.
